Picasso's Top 7 Tips for a Better Life

Picasso’s Top 7 Tips for Creating an Exciting Life

“Some painters transform the sun into a yellow spot, others transform a yellow spot into the sun.”

Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter, sculptor and creator in many creative fields. He’s perhaps the most well-known painter from all of the 20th century.

He also had some interesting things to say about life that are applicable to management. Here are my 7 favorite tips from him.

1. You have to believe to be able to do.

“He can who thinks he can, and he can’t who thinks he can’t. This is an inexorable, indisputable law.”

This is a great quote because it doesn’t just say that you should “believe in yourself!” It explains why you need to believe in yourself and your ability to do something to actually do it.

The funny thing is that it’s hard to see how much your beliefs control your performance and how you see your world when you are used at looking at things from just one perspective.

When you think you can do something instead of not, your perception of that thing changes. And your perception of yourself too. Without those changed perspectives it will be hard to find the courage, motivation, enthusiasm and whatever else you may need.

If you think you’ll fail, you are likely to hold yourself back or even trip yourself up (sometimes unconsciously). If you on the other hand think you can do something your mind will start to find solutions and focus on fixing things instead of whining about them. From all of the stimuli around you things, solutions and opportunities will just start to pop up. Without that focus on the right thing, on your ability to do, your mind may not find the resources and solutions that are needed.

2. Push your limits.

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.”

Pushing yourself and stretching is necessary to grow. And the more you push yourself the quicker you can grow.

But it can be scary. My best tip so far: stay present as much as you can while doing something you cannot yet do.

This can greatly decrease possible negative feelings that are holding you back. And with those feelings out of your mind and body it becomes easier to focus, to feel positive feelings and actually perform well and learn to do whatever you have set your mind upon.

3. Don’t wait for inspiration or the right moment.

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find us working.”

Inspiration can show up on its own, waltzing in through a door or a window. But doing things that way makes work inconsistent – both in quality and quantity - and you spend a lot of time waiting.

I find that it’s better to follow Pablo’s suggestion and just start working. For the first minutes what you do may suck quite a bit and it’s hard going. But after a while inspiration seems to catch up with you. Things start to flow easier and your work is of a higher quality.

If you feel inspired one day that’s great. Use your inspiration. But don’t limit yourself to the moments where you feel inspired or you feel like the moment is just right to do something. Act instead. A lot of the time you can find inspiration along the way. Or accomplish whatever you want to do despite the moment not looking just as you would like it to.

4. Act.

“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.”

“Action is the foundational key to all success.”

I know. If you have been reading this blog for a while you may have noticed that talk about taking action is included in a lot of the articles. But that’s because, as Picasso says, action is the foundation. Without taking action any information – no matter how useful – will be pretty useless. This is also the part of personal growth or just life that is often forgotten or perhaps avoided.

It’s scary. It can feel difficult to do it. Or you may not feel like it’s the right moment now. But developing a habit of taking more and more action can make a huge difference.

5. Ask the right questions.

“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.”

It’s easy to ask yourself the wrong questions. To ask yourself questions that just will give you answers that confirm that you are incompetent, foolish, wrong and tell you that your future is limited. Questions that will sink you instead of help to lift you up.

So instead, ask yourself empowering questions.

  • When having a seemingly negative experience ask yourself: what is good about this? What can I learn from this? There is always something you can learn and have use for to create positive experiences later on.

  • When interacting with others ask yourself: How can I bring even more value (understanding, help, practical solutions, fun, excitement etc.) to this interaction?

  • In just about any situation you can always ask yourself: what’s great about this situation/experience? This is a quick way to shift your mood and thoughts into more positive, resourceful and empowered forms through gratitude.

There are of course many more empowering questions you can ask yourself. I think the main point is to reframe the questions you ask yourself into positive questions that open up - instead of closes – the door to opportunities and possibilities.

6. See the hidden beauty by not judging.

“If only we could pull out our brain and use only our eyes.”

One of big advantages of becoming more present in your everyday life is that you decrease the amount of analysing and labelling you do to the things/people in your surroundings. You don’t judge as much.

This might sound strange but in the moments when you are present the ordinary world becomes more interesting and wonderful. Colors can seem brighter. Your see more aliveness in trees, nature and in people. You see the wonder of all your man-made gadgets and stuff. Things that most often seem common, routine and boring become fascinating and something you can appreciate.

It’s like you are observing your world with more clarity and curiousness. Like a little kid again, discovering things while they still feel fresh. Before they have just become walking, talking and growing labels with years of associations and thoughts attached.

7. It’s not too late.

“Youth has no age.”

Don’t let social conditioning tell you what you can or cannot do just because you are of one age or another. Age is most of the time just in your head anyway. Take tip #1 into consideration and choose for yourself what you can do. And use tip # 6 and ask yourself the right questions instead of ones that limit you.

And, remember, the present moment is all there ever is anyway. So don’t get caught up in the past too much. Most of the time you really don’t have to act consistently with what you have done before. If you do, then that’s your choice. And you can decide to do something different too. Right now.

It is really only too late to change if you look at your life as a time-line. If you learn to become more present, if you learn to live more in the now, much of that thinking just falls away. You realize that you can consciously choose and do pretty much whatever you like in the present moment and built a future with new possibilities.

Since I came to NY, I met some people despite their age, never stops trying new things or doing things that are usually considered to be "for younger people".
When I talk to these people, they are young! really young at heart.
and they look much younger than their real age!
so I completely agree that "youth has no age" by Pablo Picasso.
I want to be like that when I get older.
I guess I gotta believe that I can in order to do so.

And to stay alive and kicking...

You can't have a "better life" if you can not be around to enjoy it.

So be in good health, stay alive, and get lucky, because if you hang on long enough, you might be able to enjoy all the wonderful things that only time can offers.

I don't know what is the problem of mine. Toward life, I tend to be very passive. Hardly anything excises me, I rarely have any passion to do anything. Even my interests, I cannot say one that really pleases me.

Let say you are the owner of a news network, and I am an expert on a certain subject, I come to you and tell you I have a lead on a certain story, and I ask you would you be interested, you tell me yes. While you and your reporter agree to cover that story, you learn that the subject matter of the story involve investigation that your reporter have no technical knowledge of, then I come to you and tell you, "well, I am an expert in this subject, I can be your consultant and help you in your news investigation of this story, but only if you pay me a certain amount of money."

This is a big story that is affecting many people. Your competitors will also want to be the first to cover this story, however I am the only person who have the lead and I come to you first. If you do not pay me then you would not be able to cover your story. If you decide not to let me help you in covering the story, then I will go and give the lead to one of your competitors.

You are the owner of your news organization, what management step would you take to decide whether you want me to help you and give you the lead to cover the story, and whether you should pay me?

Believing in yourself is my greatest motivator. Nothing is impossible, but in order to accomplish any and everything, you have to first give yourself an opportunity to take action. As they say, "You never know unless you try." The whole world can have faith in you and give you the most motivating speech ever- but it's all worthless unless you believe in yourself. As Picasso implies, if you don't think you can do it- most likely you won't even try doing it. Believing in yourself IS pushing yourself to another level. It's apparent that people tend to find excuses for their lack of actions, and it's not healthy because for every excuse you make, you are limiting yourself further. For anyone reading this who wants to live a better life/ accomplish something more in your life- DO IT. It's amazing how much potential we all have, and how much opportunity we can create for ourselves to explore our abilities.

The quote in the fourth area "Act" was quite interesting:
“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.”
I LOVE these kind of fortune cookie quotes because I feel they are so simple, yet so powerful. With our everyday obstacles, we tend to procrastinate things that may be very important. I think the recent movie that might go hand-in-hand with this quote is "The Bucket List." Two older men feel they need to do everything they ever wanted to accomplish before they die. I find these ideas influencial because they make us realize that life is short.

"It's not too late"

I completely agree. By the time I leave Baruch with my Master's degree, I will be 28, and just starting my first real career. I will probably be older than my immediate supervisor! However, I will be much happier than I was before, even when I was making 'decent' money. It is never too late. Difficult? Yes, but always possible. My success coming back to school and being able to still live has proven that to me.

Lidija Stupar said...

All of these are very true. I like the one about how it's never too late the most. Now I believe that you can do anything if only you believe in your self and want it hard enough. I hope that is true. Like many others I am not quite sure about my career choice but I gave it my best shot. I hope that if I ever want to change a career the Picasso's words will be true and I'll be able to start all over again with whatever I want, when ever I want it.

I truly beleive that the biggest enemy one can have is oneself. If we really want to get something in life, the environment actually helps us achieve it.

We actually have to make the effort and try to get it. Everything seems hard in the beginning but like they say..if u really try hard, you can find GOD. I think that as a human being, if we complain less and try more, we all will be achievers.

First of all I have to say that Picasso is an excellent. I don't just love his painting but also the messages he attempts to deliver through them. I agree with every one of the listed tips.
Belief is the most important element towards success. You have to belief in something to make it happen. As a painter, you have to belief that you can draw a sun, to be able to actually draw, otherwise it will only be a yellow dots on a piece of paper. An example from my personal life: I play cricket with a lot of motivation and desire of winning, in one of the matches we scored forty runs in six overs, which is pretty low score. Outlook was already a win situation for the other team, but we believed that it wasn't over and completely held our belief high, and at the end we kept them under thirty and actually won it. I think belief alone is not sufficient, commitment and belief together make things happen, while belief alone gets things started.
Pushing your limits is another one of the worth learning skill if you want to go far in your life. Every time I walk into my dad's place, I know that I'm not an experienced and skilled manager. But I do with all of my focus solely upon it. In the end, I end up feeling better about myself. Trying leads to success, you have to go beyond them to make your future better. If you will continue to think that you are not capable to perform a task you will basically never going to learn it. There have been many times when my computer has given me a problem, I don't just run to my next door computer repair, I try myself fixing it and majority of the time I succeeded.
If I simply waited for inspiration or the right time to come to me, I would never get any place. If I believe that I can do something, and get started, inspiration will follow along. I completely agree that acting is also an important element towards having a better life. Waiting without any reason is worthless, the outcome tomorrow can be very similar to today, the sooner you get things done, more you will be able to get done. If you wait till tomorrow, a lot of things will remain unfinished. You never will get everything done that you have let until tomorrow. Personally, I hate people who wait till the very moment to get things done. Last semester, I had a group assignment in Economics, even though we did fine, my group members started doing things on the very last day that assignment was due. I got very angry on them, because last minute things don't have that teamwork component fully established in them. Even if professor gives us an A, we never understood the point of the assignment, which was getting together and working as a team.
I agree that we should ask the right questions. Most of time, when we are faced with problems, at first, we try to find why we have a problem instead of how can we learn from it and make it better. There is no point of fixing a mistake without learning from it.
I could not be more agree with him on, "See the hidden beauty by not judging", a thing is beautiful until you can break it down and try and make sense of it. I think thats why they say, when you want to live life, use your heart than your brain. Of all the above tips, the last one, "youth has no age" makes more sense to me. Everyday people judge me because I am young, they talk about lack of experience especially at my work place. They often try and explain me things that they don't even know of.. which drives me quite crazy.
After all is said and done, what matters is how better a life you are living today as compared to yesterday.

Hi Professor:

According to Picasso's 7 favorite’s tips, I believe that in order to do something one have to believe in him/her self that he can do that thing. If one do not believe, there is no how he/she can do the thing. However, if a person agrees in his mind that he can do something, then he begins to see that thing in another point of view. But, if his mind does not agree, he will look at the thing in only one side which may not solve the situation of that thing. Believing that you can do the thing helps you perform better and more effective. Also, pushing one’s limits is also an important value in life. One should always do what he/she cannot do, in order to learn how to do it for future use. If a person focus on doing what he/she know he may not learn, because he already know it which does not add to his/her knowledge anymore. But, if one is inspire in learning new things which will add more to his/her knowledge, then it will be more helpful and beneficial for future use. In addition, if a person learns to become more present in his/her surroundings; if one learn to live in now rather than past. You will realize that you will choose and do whatever you like in the present moment and built a future with new possibilities rather choosing from the past experience.

About 7th tip, “It’s not too late.”
Yes, youth has no age, and I believe that youth and young age are different things. However, some youth elements belong to young age. Moreover, being young has big advantages, and people should take advantage of their youngness. Young people tend to be forgiven their failures. It is a very good time to act stupid or be stupid. Doing things without planning and/or thinking.
Especially in business, things become harder to do when people are not so young any more. They should have done these things when they were young.

Well, I guess I am “not so young,” since I know the value of youngness…

When people say talk about a better life, they mean a more enjoyable life. I have my own tips to enjoy my life.

Be Honest to Myself and Act Honestly to Myself
Being honest to myself is sometime hard. Being honest to my hopes, visions, and dreams can make people who are important to me sad or disappointed, or requires a lot of effort. However, being honest gives me strength and makes me happier.

Take Responsibility for my Life.
My life is mine. I follow myself and make decisions for my life. I can blame nobody about my life. To do so, I have to be strong enough to take all responsibilities for what I did, am doing, and will do. This reduces so much conflict with people and myself.

Love Myself, and Respect Others Values.
I believe that the first step to enjoy my life is to love myself. Respecting other’s values is the first step to grown up.

For me, these three principles are very useful to manage difficult and tough moments, such as when I was about to loose my goals, or when I had a big conflict with a colleague in my office.

What a great way to put thoughts into words. I also beliece that the quantity of years lived doesn't is different from the quality of the above mentioned years. Some great people dided quite young but their contribution to the world outlives them for centuries, eras. All we can do is to try to capture the best of what is given to us and live responsibly-respect each day and work on ourselves to improve the overall quiality of our lives.

All of the maxims here are inspirational, but the one that stuck out in my mind was "Its not too late". This really help me to put things in perspective. I have the tendency to have set milestones for when things should be done. This could be very discouraging because I am often disheartened when i do not achieve certain goals by a certain time. It is refreshing to remember that age does not matter.

i agree with "youth has no age" as well, it doesn't really matter the age, but your inside, if you don't tell you age, and who will know it...therefore...be youself..be young forever

I think of all the tips, the hardest to apply to every day life is #3: "don't wait for inspiration or the right moment." I find it very difficult to make take the first step and begin a paper, project, or assignment. But I think you're right-- it is important to act and as your acting, to ask yourself, what can I learn from this? It is easy to forget and takes patience, but I think it is well worth the time and effort.

Tom said...

Confidence is one of the most important aspects in determining a person’s success. Without confidence, one will never be able to break out of the shell. It takes only one person to break the chain and do something different. For example, two people are shy at public speaking. But one of them as enough confidence to make the speech, the other person will gain confidence as well. If you think you are a failure and can’t do anything, this in turn will only lead to failure and you will never break out of your shell. Who knows, maybe when you try something you may like it and actually be good at it. If you think you can do something, then I suggest you do it. For if you fail, you will only learn about yourself and grow as a person.

Inspiration is within us. I believe this is also related to our motivation. When we are motivated, we will find any excuse to get something done, inspiration perhaps? There are also times when somebody or something does inspire us to act. I believe these are the situations when we are thinking the most clearly about our surroundings. This relates to the “if he can do it so can I” quote.

Action is the part that is left out a lot of times. Many people will “talk the talk” but will they “walk the walk.” Without action, nothing gets accomplished and your talk means absolutely nothing. You may be able to talk a big game, but it is also necessary to back up your talk with some big action. I agree that it is sometimes hard to act upon something and we may deliberate for a while. In the end, I believe it is important to act because it might be something you really want to do. If it wasn’t so important, would you have spent so much time deliberating on whether or not to act?

I think that a lot of times one will ask a closed ended question because they are scared of the possibilities. But when asking open ended questions, it is just as important to seek the answer from others. Although we may be able to answer this open ended question, it is wise to ask others and pool together the best responses.

It is very difficult to not make judgments about things. It is human nature for us to judge. We judge based upon our own experiences and perceptions which makes it harder not to judge. It takes a lot of discipline not to judge. In order to view the world with clarity, we must be able to push back our memories and act as if we never experienced it before.

Anthony said...

Throughout my life I have pushed my limits on a few things, then which led to me finding a new passion. “I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” This quote I find to be true for many of the classes I take especially accounting. When I came into Baruch, I thought accounting was really difficult. It still is, but now I have a better grasping of the concepts so it isn't as a mystery as it once was. Also I got into many sports because I pushed my limits and tried something new. This gave me something to do during my free time as well as keep my body well conditioned. At first I was intimidated, but I just pushed myself so I can grow more and I can be a knowledgeable accountant or even a athlete on television. I hope this mindset can continue throughout my life.

keep it simple said...

Two out of these 7 tips are very helpful for me. Believe in yourself is foundamental towards the success. you are not able to convince other to trust you to do some important task if you can't convince yourself first. And the beauty of not judging, I think this is one of the points that distinguish the wise from fool.

I especially agree with the "Push your limits." I think that is what life is all about. If you don't push your limits, you will never know your limits. I am a very active person when it comes to sports. This summer I will be captain of a boating team in Queens. I will definitely use what I learned in this class to help manage my team. I will encourage them to push their limits, and believe that "pain is only temporary" (that's our team motto). Thank you professor for such a fun class.

I think the 5th one is so true because I think people often times try to avoid what seems to them as impossible or difficult at the time, and we often give ourself many excuses to get around of the problems rather to bravely face it and meet the chanllenges. I think afraid of loosing probably is the big reason why many people have such a reaction in encountering difficulties. I myself sometimes try to avoid things that are complicated or less interested. But to think about it, I also have lost many opportunities to experience new things (and missed the best time or chance to solve the problems) or gaining more knowledge by attampting to avoid them.

This is my favorite post the whole semester and I have found it the most useful. It applies to me so much during this semester especially. Prior to this year, I just accepted B's and was happy to get an A. I believed that with workload, this was all I could achieve. However, I got tired of having others pass me up, especially when their schedules looked ten times worse than mine. SO I set a standard for myself, and realized there was no reason I couldn't find time to excel in all areas in my life. I know what it takes to get an A so I simply do it. The "I know I can so I can, I know I can't so I can't" quote is so true!

It seems that Picasso was not only a painter but a philosopher as well. His tips make a lot of sense. The list seems complete, however i would add one tip though which is probably a very important one: take good care of your health, without good health it is almost impossible to reach those goals.

Just for fun:

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not flunk
He keepeth me from lying down when I should be studying
He leadeth me beside the water cooler for a study break
He restores my faith in study guides
He leads me to better study habits
For my grades' sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of borderline grades
I will not have a nervous breakdown
For thou art with me
My prayers and my friends, they comfort me.

Thou givest me the answeres in moments of blankness
Thou anointest my head with understanding
My test paper runnest over with questions I recognize
Surely passing grades and flying colours shall follow me
All the days of examinations

And I shall not have to dwell in this University
Forever!

Amen!

These are all very positive and inspiring thoughts from Picasso. I think everyone would like to be able to change themselves for the better and shape their lives the way they want it to be. I always try to believe in myself and say I can do it but when the actual event comes, I'm filled with self-doubt and change my mind otherwise. Change is not something that happens so easily. I guess it takes a lot of courage in order to be able to make changes. I hope that with time, I'll be able to build up my courage and overcome these obstacles that I'm facing. Thank you for the wonderful semester Professor Kurpis. I wish you and everyone the best of luck in life and everything that comes with it.

Talk about changes, why is Porter still teaching his little Five Forces? I know strategy is important, but is competition is just that? I wonder if Porter's view of competition is old or if it still relevant today? Do businesses have to compete? Do businesses only compete within the same old circle, same old boundary, some old limit?

I think that is the problem with all these economic theories, models, management theories, marketing theories, consulting doctrines, forecasting predictions, etc., they do not take account for changes in society and the world as the result of environmental changes and scientific, technology innovations and advances.

The world is always changing, so must business in order to take the lead or at least to survive. Like your previous post about maxims, what is true in the past might not be true today, because it might not works and be applicable.

Anonymous said...

When Porter write a book, he would not know what the world will be like 5 years from then. If Porter writes a book today, he would not have a clue about what the world be like 10, 20 years in the future. Professor Porter is constant observing, analyzing, reading, researching, and learning. It is possible that because Porter have to make a living and to some sense to defend his credibility, that he has to continue to teach his theories and find reasons, ways, and examples to make his theories applicable. In a way, he has to make his theories to continue be applicable today, and to make sure what he teaches is useful to the students and business practitioners.

Kudos to you, professor, for teaching about changes and innovation. It does not make sense for not teaching about changes and innovation in business school and management class in today's environment. It is very good that you wrap up the course with the most essential topic in the last session of the course. HOWEVER, I wish you to talk about this topic as an introduction to the course in the beginning, and in the end again as a resonating summary, and if possible, between the beginning and the end, have some reminding talks about changes and innovation throughout the course.

You mentioned that if we the students did not learn anything throughout the course of Management 3120, at least we should take away with the lesson about changes and innovation. Yet sadly, many students for whatever reason did not attend the last session of the class. How many students still remember what the story and its importance of the "boiling frog" is about?

I am sure you have notice, that today's D-School (Designing School), Art School, and Engineering School are competing with B-School (Business School), with MBA Program. Students are increasingly choosing to attend D-School over B-School, and businesses are hiring D-School graduates as much as they use to hire MBA's.

Society have change. I just think that even if I was not studying business, or if I was studying at another university majoring in something else, learning and knowing about changes and innovation is still vital.

I completely agree with all the tip because we have to believe in our ability and not limit ourself to resources. We have to put ourself workign towards our goal. however, i disagree that Tip# 5. How can we know that a question is right or wrong. Some one mught view it in certain way while others may not. At that situation the question might be wron. So, i believe that there is no wrong question. Every question asked depends upon ones ability.

I think I can say I knew most advises in this post and always think it should be so. Then if it is so true, I should have been a better self than I am not. The thing is “action” or to say I never act in an appropriate timing manner and most of time I just wait and end up do nothing to change anything. “Action is the foundation…developing a habit of taking more and more action can make a huge difference” is going to be my daily reminder and a habit must to be. The time to change is never better than now.

I like this entry more than the un-bear-able situation or the maxims post.

Management lessons can really apply to life. I felt this class is more like a philosophy class and one of those life-coaching or self-management class than a business management class.

Professor, I wonder how people react when they find out you teach management? This class change my perspective about management. Management class is not stiff and boring at all. There are management lesson learned, but it still does not seems like a business class at all.

Another thing I learn, sometimes you won't know what you have until you lose it. I miss this class. Now it is over, I feel little bit sad.

The last tip I feel is the best one. I always say that age is only a number and that it represents absolutely nothing. Nobody is too old or too young to do anything. If you are young in your head and in your heart then you are young to everybody else, and most importantly can do anything.

Ask the right questions? Hmm… That’s something I usually don’t end up doing when something goes wrong. Asking what I did right in a bad situation usually never crosses my mind. I think from now on, I’ll ask myself more questions that help me improve and learn from my failures.

I think that it is true we need to believe in ourselves in order for us to do something in life, and not only that but to push our limits too.

I'm not going to lie these are some great tips professor from none other than my favrite paintor since I was a little child...Pablo Picasso. He's great not only as a painter but as person, an incredible human being and it showed through his paintings. 1. You have to believe in what you do. - You absolutely have to even if you can't you should try to can learn. which leads to number 2. Push your limits, like the quote "You never know where you're going unless you know where you come from." or the quote by Bruce Lee "Using no way as way, having no limitation as limitation." if you believe and know who you are as a person you can have confidence to do new things to take you where you are going as far a experience, knowledge and just overall growth and as number 3 says Don't wait for inspiration people really need to start working on being better well-rounded people for themselves more than anything else the rest (career, family, money) will all fall into place.

I believe that one of the things that keeps holding me back is my thinking that time goes by too fast and I am getting old and running out of time for everything I want to achieve. Maybe I should just enjoy every day that goes by and appreciate what I have achieved so far without limiting myself for new things I know I am capable to accomplish.

My life changed a lot since i came to the United States. I have a depression time 3 years ago when I just started my college life here and I couldn't get used to everything new around me. I was always thinking back and felt sad about the big change in my life. however, I finially decide to believe in "today" and "tomorrow". they are the only thing that a person always can hold in hand.

I believe that by reading this last blog, I will live a better life. Many times I hit a wall, thinking that I cannot advance anymore, apparently I am wrong. Even though it is very hard to inspire yourself at hard times, you need to always try. Always say to yourself that I can do it. I will never give up on myself, because in the end, there is only one person you can fully depend on, and it is you.

“Only put off until tomorrow what you are willing to die having left undone.”

This is one thing that I've been struggling with as I'm a senior and this is my last semester at Baruch. I wonder if I did enough to encourage those around me or if I have made a positive impact on their lives. I don't want to leave a of indecision or inaction. So each that I wake up, I try to focus on the most important things that I can engage in on that day. I try to make the best of each day that I have and I pray that it has paid off.

I think all these tips can be helpful to us if we take them seriously. The problem is really acting the way we want to, because sometimes we are not strong enough in the mind to overcome our weaknesses.

Nothing is impossible but it will be impossible when we're not taking any actions. I believe everyone including myself have many goals that we wanted to achieve in our personal life. That's why all of us are motivated to live. Life is like a rollercoaster. Things doesn't go as smoothly as we wished. We should always think positively by looking things at better perspectives in order to stay happy and live better.

It is never too late to follow the path that you dreamt of as a kid (Of course, you can't be an athlete anymore or an actor or singer...you need talent for that).

As long as all of us have courage and purpose, we can overcome any amount of odds. I look at it this way: My generation, if we are lucky, have about 60 summers left. 60 summers left to improve, enjoy, and fulfill your life. Better start enjoying each summer!

I can't tell you how much this post actually helps me decide to mange my time wisely. These 7 credos as I would put it are considered to be motivational statements that come out of every motivational speaker that I have read about. I read a book called, "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", and ever since I read that book, I felt as if the best route to being sucessfull one day and become one to be talked about is to only go the route less taken. It's the unqiueness of an individual that makes them different from the norms.

It might have been confusing what I said, but what I ultimately have to do is believe in myself as there will always be the naysayers out there and those who sit back and urge me on, but in reality, it's I myself that I must believe in and push myself to just go ahead with things.

Less talking, more doing!

“Action is the foundational key to all success.” Like the vision show we had watched in class."Vision without action is just a dream.
Action without vision merely wastes time.Vision coupled with action can make things happen." I agree that action is the key to success, I have to take action everyday in our life, no matter big or small actions, it will keep us improve in everyday's life. One of the primary key in life we can't live without.

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free,
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be,
And when we are in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.
When true simplicity is gain'd,
To bow and to bend we will not be asham'd,
To turn, turn will be our delight,
Till by turning, turning we come round right.

1. The advice is definitely well chosen, and very applicable to all of us since young adulthood can be a tricky age when you need advice the most, but people tend to think you’ve overgrown the ‘some guidance would help’ age. I agree with his first advice the most, I recently read a psychological study that explained how when you are expecting to fail, your unconscious actually leads you in that direction. I didn’t really understand what you meant by ‘being more present today’ until I got to the last advice. Overall, I think we would have to read these 7 tips every morning, life has a strange way of overwhelming us with so many insignificant details that we are no longer able to see the big picture. I wonder if reading this and trying to apply them is enough to counter that...

I agree that Youth has no age. I think that one can do anything to feel young and lively. When I get old, I want to travel the world and go site seeing. Being able to do what I like and to have the freedom to experience anything is youth in my eyes. Below are what I think about the 7 tips:
"You have to believe to be able to do." If one cannot believe in ones self, all they will have is depression. What is a life with the inability to cope with what comes ones way and to believe in ones self?
"Push your limits." I think that pushing yourself to the limit is what will get you places. I think that I definitly accomplished this task this semester because I have been so exhausted from all the things Im involved in this semester. I decided to make a change. To do something different and to become a new me. And as a result of my 6 classes, job, intern, and other activities, I have been able to accomplish something I was once unable to do.
"Don’t wait for inspiration or the right moment." Have you ever heard of the saying that time doesnt stop for anyone? Its a philisophical quote I often refer back to. Inspiration will come when it comes. But to wait for something to come is a waste of time. Live your life to the fullest.
"Act." Hmmm. When thinking about the word act, I am reminded of the quote mentioned in class. A vision without action is a dream. Action without vision is a waste of time. Vision with action, anything can happen. I think thats how it goes. Its true what you say Professor. This is a very inspirational and meaningful quote.
"Ask the right questions." I dont agree with this. Its like saying that there are wrong questions. But, what is a wrong question? Is it wrong to want to learn? What is a right question? Questions should be asked regardless of what anyone says. If it were me, I would change it to Ask Questions.
"See the hidden beauty by not judging." I like this quote. People often judge others on appearance and automatically assume things about a person. Looks dont matter, its whats inside that counts.
"It’s not too late." Its not too late to do what one wants. One needs to believe and push ones self. Its not too late to accomplish your goals. Its up to the individual to achieve what they want. It depends on their will and the path they choose. Be open to opportunities. Be optimistic. Live your life to the fullest before it really is too late.

"See the hidden beauty by not judging" is my most favorite part of all the 7 tips. This is something I try to do when I become stressed out, tired, or bored of something. I clear up my mind and stop analyzing my surroundings for awhile. It makes me happy and calm not to be easily mad about something and view things positively in general. A lot of things that are just ordinary and routine, such as going to bed or having lunch, I always appreciate how lucky I am to have a home and money to buy food. Thinking optimistically really helps elevate my energy.

1. This brings me back to the "Power of vision" movie and our own posts.

There is good quote by Robert H. Schuller, which parallels with the one of P. Picasso: "The only place where your dream becomes impossible is in your own thinking."

2. Very true. It's not only scary but also exhausting. But the price and the reward are closely correlated.

3. This is exactly how I feel every time I sit down to write a blog post or comments, or write anything at all, for that matter. The first five-ten minutes are a total misery but it gets better if I keep going.

4. As a D personality type I am completely "at home" with action. Over time I realized that if a well thought-through plan still looks scary - just close your eyes jump into it.

5. Funny that I was thinking about "asking the right questions" only today morning. Asking yourself questions is an inevitable part of problem (plan, idea, etc.) analysis. It's also a great tool for self-analysis.

6. Well ... this is exactly what I was working on since the last summer. By the way, it's one of well known Tibetan practices. But here is the splinter, in our management class I had to go back & thinking about something that I have already thought through year ago. That makes me feel being held back. But then I understand that MGT 3120 is a course designed for very young adults, so no complaints. I am just too old for it. That's all.

7. Great! Then I probably still have a chance to have a family and my own child (at least one).

Picasso was a very bright man and i totally agree with him. You must belive you have the power and ability to do something in order to do it. If you keep telling yourself you can do it, you will find a way to make yourself do it. Its like a test. I hate finance with a passion and everytime i have a test coming up, i say "i'm gonna go bad anyway, whats the point of studying." Once i stopped saying that and started saying "i'm gonna learn this on my own and get an A" i actually motivated myself and looked at finance as a personal challenge that i must overcome. If you dont push your limits, you will never better yourself. You shouldnt wait for inspiration to come to you, rather you should inspire yourself in everything you do. When you act, inspiration is created naturally. You cannot be afraid to act. Whether the outcome be good or bad, a lesson is always learned that benefits you in the future. Also, never be afraid to go against the norm. Dont be a follower, create a new path and maybe others will follow you. If you go into a situation with the same mindset and previous judgments as others, you are automatically closing yourself off to new ideas. You will never be able to grow as an individual if you are constantly analyzing and thinking about things.

Wow, no wonder the man was such genius as an artist, anyone who lives their lives according to these guidelines is bound to be successful. Although all the point are great, I have to say #7 is my favorite mostly because it applies to me.
Doing business from a young age, dealing with customers and tenants I have had to develop a certain level of maturity. like the point says, age is just a number that tends to be in your head. It's really how you carry yourself and portray your thoughts that count. With age comes experience but not necessarily knowledge.
My second favorite point has to be the one about action. That is something that my parents instilled in me from a young age. They would always stress that if i wanted something I had to go out and get it, nothing is ever given to you in this life you have to take it. And I always respected that because I know the hardships both of my parents went through coming from poverty.
And my third favorite point is push yourself to the limit. Like I said I respect all that my parents have achieved in their lives and I feel owe it to them to push myself to the limit. If they could build a successful business coming from nothing, I should be able to multiply it by 100 since they started me with something.

This is exactly right and one should learn from all these quotations and the explanation which you have provided underneath each of those quotations. this is the first time, in life I have seen so many people of old age working. In my country, they just stop working or giv up after a certain age. We should never think that we have learn enough in our life because that when we stop exploring stuff and our knowledge become less and less in other stuff. We must keep trying what we can do.
It can only happen if we believe in ourselves that we can do it.
The longer we going to say , we CAN'T do it, the longer it will take us to do it. Thats what I belive in.

Having read Picasso’s tips, I feel like I have a new sense of ambition. Inwardly, I feel we all have the drive to want to succeed, but even the most motivated individuals sometimes need encouragement. His tips, whether they are in a particular order, or not, are very encouraging. I have always committed myself to the idea that I can do anything that I set my mind to, and anything worth having is probably going to be difficult to get. Knowing this, I am prepared to do whatever it takes, often pushing myself, to achieve my goals. Even when I experience failure and I feel downtrodden, I try to push myself and continue to work because I know that there are moments that come to those that seek them, not those that wait. When presented with these opportunities, I try my best to make the best of the situations by evaluating what is presented to me and acting in a practical manner. Sometimes opportunities may not seem like much on the surface, but we have to have the sense, and the vision to see beyond what is presented to you. And no matter what, we should all know that it is never too late to achieve our goals. We all have the ability to do so; we just need the encouragement and self-determination.

I think everyone heard the term before that you have to tell yourself that you can do it when you do something that is difficult.
However, it is easy to say but hard to do. When you try to focus to solve on something and keep telling yourself that you can do it, there is always the other side of you that will stick out who say that you can't do it. As a result, you would be pulled back.
Also, i agree with the term that to leave out the judgment and only leave the eyes. We want to obsorb the information, but we don't want to make the judgments based on what you see since there may be other factors that may affect or lead to things you see.
